YOUR ELEMENTYour Element determines what spells you are able to learn, as well as your basic personality. First, you should decide on one of the basic elements (Fire, Water, Earth, Air, or Metal). You will start with a two-star (**) proficiency in that element. Then, you can choose a sub-element to specialize in. Each main element allows you to choose one of two sub-elements (Chi, Plant, Light, Dark, Thunder). You will start with a one-star (*) proficiency in the sub-element you choose.
WATER: Thunder/Dark
FIRE: Dark/Light
AIR: Light/Plant
EARTH: Plant/Chi
METAL: Chi/Thunder
Alternately, you can specialize in your main element only, which limits your range of spells, but starts you off at a 3-star proficiency. You can also specialize in both sub-elements if you so wish, which broadens your range but starts your main element off at a 1-star proficiency.
(For a complete list of spells, check the Quests & Items section)
Each element and sub-element you choose has an effect on your personality, detailed as follows. Choose wisely, for I expect you to stay true to this personality throughout the game (though I do encourage character development, so you don't exactly have to follow it perfectly).
ELEMENTS
WATER: Water-type characters are smart, wise, frank, and resourceful, the type of people to look before they leap. They are often physically weak but mentally strong, with good memories. Characters specializing solely in Water are sly tricksters with overly-calculating minds, and tend towards rudeness. Their magic focuses mainly on gaining the upper hand over their enemies, with spells such as Disarm, Disorient, and Brainwash. A good Water character can finagle her way out of any situation, and is rarely at a loss for a plan.
FIRE: Fire-type characters are energetic, passionate, easily excitable, and have a tendency to become aggressive. They seek joy, gratification, and the attention of others. Those specializing only in Fire are hyperactive, overzealous, and lack restraint. Fire spells focus on creating chaos, as with Berserk and Incendiary, or on increasing strength with Furor. A good Fire-type is either an offensive powerhouse, or the man behind the scenes, turning his allies into serious contenders.
AIR: Air-type characters are kind, steady, understanding, and gentle. They have logical, practical minds and tend to be innovative and go with the flow. Characters specializing solely in Air can be prejudiced and biased, and have a tendency to become upset or unstable. Air magic manipulates the character's surroundings, with spells like Glide, Gravity, and Telekinesis. An adept Air character can be the tactician of the group, ready to help her allies out of sticky situations.
EARTH: Earth-type characters are trustful, steady, loyal, and responsible. They are honest, down-to-earth people who don't tend to change their minds too easily. Those with an Earth specialization are stubborn, inflexible, and overly trusting. Earth magic manipulates matter with Splinter and Petrify, and alters defenses with Solidify and Temper. A solid Earth character can both protect his allies and open up opportunities for them to strike.
METAL: Metal-type characters are righteous, faithful, and gallant, with great strength, fortitude, and courage. They have a sense of honor and a definite urge to win. Those with a specialization in Metal have little caution and tend to overextend themselves, motivated too much by their emotions. Metal spells like Protect and Decoy shield the character's friends, and Mend can restore broken weapons. A strong Metal character is the leader of the pack, and precedes others into battle.
SUB-ELEMENTS
LIGHT: Characters specializing in Light lack Metal, so they are mostly quiet and nervous. However, they are dedicated to the well-being of their friends and allies, and can assist them with spells such as Charge and Fate. They can also wield the powerful spell Mirror, which grants a character immunity from magic.
DARK: Dark specialists have less Earth, and are therefore selfish, insincere, and tend to care little for others. Their cunning knows no bounds, and they have the uncanny ability to blend into a crowd, especially with the use of the Shadow spell, which renders them completely invisible to the naked eye.
CHI: Chi specialists are greatly in tune with the natural world, though they lack Fire and are inclined to be shy and have little confidence. However, they are able to manipulate their surroundings and other characters on a metaphysical level, including speeding up and slowing down time. Ultimately, they will be able to learn Puppet, and bend other characters to their will.
THUNDER: Those specializing in Thunder are deficient in Air. They can become easily jealous, and often don’t care much for themselves. However, they can channel these emotions into terribly destructive powers, like the spell Purgatory, which simultaneously lowers an enemy's stats and boosts the caster's.
PLANT: Plant specialists have little Water, are indecisive, and lack foresight and stamina. They more prefer the rear guard to the frontlines in battle, and as such are well equipped with spells to support their allies. Their most impressive spell is Synthesis, which not only restores HP and MP, but also boosts the target's stats.
